Grade III Wastewater Operator
Monroeville Water Works and Sewer Board

Monroeville Water Works and Sewer Board is accepting applications for a Grade III Wastewater Operator.  Applicants must possess at time of hiring a valid driver’s license, high school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of a Grade III Wastewater Operator certification with the State of Alabama.  Ability to work non-standard hours including holidays and weekends.  The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing of ladders and stairs, lifting heavy objects up to 50 lbs., crouching or crawling in restricted areas.  The employee will be responsible for the maintaining wastewater plant and lift stations.  Employee will be required to perform the following: 

  • Maintain the grounds of the plant and pumping stations. 
  •  Waste to drying beds and remove sludge from beds. 
  • Cleans, repairs and installs sewer lines. 
  • Operates backhoe, front-end loader and tractor to cut grass, pickup sludge and install sewer lines on right of ways. 
  • Operates and maintains chemical feeders, chlorinators, sulfurnators and polymer feed equipment. 
  • Reads and records equipment hour meters and flow meters. 
  • Compiles daily activity log, makes copies and maintains files. 
  • Collects samples and performs periodic and routine laboratory tests on treatment plant influent, effluent and sludge. 
  • Maintains files of lab tests performed and methods used. 
  • Coordinates with Alabama One Call and other utility companies to spot lines.
  • Communicate with other co-workers, customers or the public in a face-to-face one-on-one setting.

Selected applicant must be able to pass pre-employment drug screen and must have a clean driving record.

Position Overview:
Under general direc-tion researches literature to maintain current information on practices and methods of utility services; analyzes needs and generates revenue; directs the formulation of strategic and operating plans, develops  and obtains approval for annual budget; reviews, updates and modifies jobs, prepares position announcements, designs selection procedures, recruits and interviews applicants and makes hiring recom-mendations, orients and trains staff, communicates work rules,  counsels employees and rates job performance; writes directives and holds group meetings, leads and directs activities of subordinate managers and staff; controls budget and ensures expenditures are in accordance with guidelines; maintains liaison and coordinates with other departments and represents City Manager at meetings as required and carries out public relations activities by speaking at civic functions and making media appearances, assists in planning and administrative functions as required.
 
Requirements: Hold bachelor’s degree in business administration, public admin-istration, engineering or closely related field and have (5) five years increasingly responsible managerial or professional experience in a management position involving the direct supervision and administration of water and sewer services.  Two years experience in the construction and maintenance of relevant systems and equipment.  Experience in metering, purchasing and warehousing is desirable OR   Have (10) ten years combination of training and experience relating to a Utilities system.  Must hold a valid driver’s license. Substantial knowledge of concepts, principles and techniques of utilities administration including marketing, metering, billing, purchasing, warehousing, accounting, finance, water purification and wastewater treatment operations.

Water Treatment Plant Operator

The employee will work under the general direction of the Superintendent of Water Production. All candidates must have past experience in water treatment and must possess a Grade 4 certification as required by ADEM to operate a water treatment plant. All candidates must possess a valid State of Alabama driver’s license and a driving record that would allow insurability by the Board’s insurance. All candidates MUST be a graduate from a senior high school or equivalent.
 
 In addition, the candidate should have the following abilities:
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions
- Working knowledge of methods/ materials used in laboratory tests in water treatment
